Best Practices Conferences
The 2004 1st Annual Best Practices Conference-Innovations in Dual Diagnosis, was held at the Queen's Conference Center in Honolulu, Hawaii on May 20-21, 2004. Attendees included psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, and social workers, students, consumers and providers of mental health services, and their family members. Total attendees exceeded over 215, over 20 of them being consumers of mental health services.
The 2005 2nd Annual Best Practices Conference Tools of Empowerment! Illness Self-Management and Self-Directed Recovery was held March 29-31, 2005 at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Over 250 mental health
providers, consumers, and stakeholders participated in the second annual best practices conference. Sponsored by the AMHD and the Hawai‘i
Consortium for Continuing Medical Education, the conference covered current
provider and consumer strategies for managing illness, coping with symptoms,
and reducing relapses. Dr. Tom Hester, chief of the AMHD, described the conference as a gathering place where providers and consumers can “live together, have fun together, and learn together.” Through videoconferencing, the event was broadcast live to five other locations statewide: the Hilo Medical Center, the Kona mayor’s office, the Kaua‘i district health office, the Maui Memorial Hospital, and the Moloka‘i Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. Drawn by her own commitment to improving mental health care in Hawai‘i, Gov. Linda Lingle delivered the conference’s opening address. Lingle, whose mother was diagnosed with mental illness, emphasized the importance of hope.
The 2006 3rd Annual Best Practices Conference — Treatments that Work: Medication Algorithms and Assertive Community Treatment was held at the Hawai'i Convention Center in Honolulu, Hawaii on April 18-20, 2006. Attendees included providers of mental health services, psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers as well as consumers of mental health services and their family members.
This year twelve Pacific Islanders received full scholarships to the conference. The AMHD awarded scholarships to Pacific Islanders in order to facilitate the
exchange of mental health resources among providers in the Pacific and Hawai‘i.
This year, scholarship recipients from the Republic of
the Marshall Islands and American Samoa presented their
practices in conference workshops. Scholarships were
also given to 11 students and 25 mental health consumers
across the state.
The 2007 4th Annual Best Practices
Conference — Work Works! Supported Employment was held at
the Hawai‘i Convention Center in Honolulu, Hawai‘i from April 3-5, 2007. Attendees
included providers of mental health services, psychiatrists, psychologists,
nurses, social workers as well as consumers of mental health services and their
family members. The conference was jointly sponsored by the Adult Mental Health
Division (AMHD) of the State of Hawai‘i Department of Health and the
Hawai‘i Consortium for Continuing Medical Education. The conference was presented
in partnership with the Hawai‘i Center for Evidence-Based Practices and
affiliated University of Hawai‘i programs in Nursing, Psychiatry, Psychology,
and Social Work. Other partners in the conference included the American Psychiatric
Nurses Association — Hawai‘i, the Hawai‘i Counseling Association, the
Hawai‘i Psychiatric Medical Association, the Hawai‘i Psychological Association,
the Hawai‘i Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers,
United Self Help, and HIPRA — the Hawai‘i Chapter of the United States
Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association.
The 2008 5th Annual Best Practices Conference -- Family Psychoeducation: Fortifying Families of Birth and Choice was held at the Hawai‘i Convention Center
in Honolulu, Hawai‘i on April 23-25, 2008. Attendees included providers of mental health services,
psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, consumers of mental health
services, and family members of consumers. The goal of this annual conference was to provide a forum for stakeholders from
Hawai‘i and the Pacific to exchange ideas and to learn from each another.
Other Conferences
The 2004 Winter Meeting of the American Association of Community Psychiatrists
was held at the Sheraton Waikiki in Honolulu, Hawaii on February 19 - 21, 2004. Attendees included nurses,
psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, consumers of mental health services and their family members. Total
attendees exceeded over 160, over 20 of them being consumers of mental health services.
The Annual State of Hawaii Forensic
Mental Health Examiner Training Conference “Best Practices in Forensic Mental Health” was
held at the McCoy Pavilion, Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu on March 14, 15 and 16, 2005. This year our

Building a Safety Net – Getting Connected for Suicide Prevention - November 15-16, 2007
The Hawai‘i State Department of Health sponsored Hawai‘i’s first suicide prevention conference,
"Building a Safety Net – Getting Connected for Suicide Prevention," which was held on November 15 and 16
at the Hilton Waikiki Prince Kuhio Hotel. Director of Health Chiyome L. Fukino, said "The conference’s goal
is to bring together agencies, organizations, communities and individuals from across the state to increase
their knowledge of suicide prevention best practices and ultimately to reduce the incidence of suicide and
suicide attempts in Hawai‘i." The conference was also co-sponsored
by the Suicide Prevention Task Force, the Hawai‘i Suicide Prevention, Education, Awareness, and
Research (SPEAR) Foundation of America, HMSA, and the Rotary Club of Metropolitan Honolulu. Please click
