Cross-Cultural Health Care Conference: Collaborative and Multidisciplinary Interventions

THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF SURGEONS - HAWAII CHAPTER AND THE SOCIETY FOR COMMUNITY RESEARCH AND ACTION - WESTERN REGION INVITES YOU TO LEARN ABOUT CULTURAL ISSUES IMPACTING HEALTH CARE IN MEDICINE, PSYCHOLOGY, AND PUBLIC HEALTH.

This conference has three different tracks:

TRACK 1: INTRODUCTION TO CULTURAL COMPETENCY / HUMILITY (Beginner)
This track is designed for those new to cultural competency / humility. It will provide an introduction to cultural competency in the field of medicine. Major topics in cross-cultural health care, such as, medical interpreters, cultural humility, and cultural immersion programs will be presented. Cultural competency in risk management will be presented, focusing in-depth on the importance of developing requisite skills to communicate with a diverse patient population.


TRACK 2: DEVELOPMENT, ASSESSMENT, AND EVALUATION OF CULTURAL COMPETENCY EFFORTS (Advanced)
This track is for those individuals that have some familiarity / working knowledge of cultural competency/humility and would like to develop courses / initiatives / programs at their institutions or agencies. An all-day workshop featuring program evaluation and assessment with community groups will be provided. Assessment and evaluation of cultural competency efforts in various settings and for diverse constituencies will be presented. Two instruments to assess cultural competency (The Tool for Assessing Cultural Competency Training (TACCT) and the Residency Training in Cross Cultural Care Survey) at the medical student and post graduate level will also be presented.


TRACK 3: POLICY ISSUES FACING CULTURAL COMPETENCY / HUMILITY EFFORTS (Expert)
This track considers participants as “leaders” and “experts” in the field of cultural competency/humility. Cultural competency will be discussed in the context of institutional and policy matters. A discussion of federal law (e.g. Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services or CLAS standards), requirements of accrediting bodies, and examples of state legislation will be presented.

This conference is approved for 11 CME credits for Physicians with a $15 fee.
 

Please register for this event no later than 2/10/2010.

No registration forms will be accepted after February 10, 2010, participants will need register on-site.

Parking rates at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki is $7.00 for self-parking and $13.00 for valet.

Learning Objectives:
Learning Objectives for each track are as follows:

TRACK 1: Introduction to Cultural Competency/Humility (Beginner)
The objective of this track is to provide physicians, healthcare workers, and those with an interest in cross-cultural health care with an awareness and knowledge of cultural matters for those who work with diverse patient populations.

TRACK 2: Development, Assessment, and Evaluation of Cultural Competency Efforts (Advanced)
The objective of this track is to enhance the assessment and evaluation skills of those who have a basic awareness and knowledge of cross-cultural health care issues.

TRACK 3: Policy Issues Facing Cultural Competency/Humility Efforts (Expert)
To provide a forum for those well-versed in the area to enhance their awareness, knowledge and skills with regard to systemic factors that have an impact on care to diverse patient populations. The goals of the participants for this track are to:

1) discuss and suggest changes to existing federal and state legislation and regulation guiding cultural competency/humility in health care;

2) outline strategies for amending/improving existing federal and state regulations impacting cross-cultural health care; and

3) specify how these strategies will be implemented and how their outcomes will be measured.
