Advance Mental Health Care Directives (AMHCDs) allow individuals to sign a legal document guiding mental health treatment if they later lose the ability to make decisions due to mental illness. They may also appoint someone they trust to make decisions on their behalf if need be. This workshop will review the history of AMHCDs nationally and in Hawaii and discuss Hawaii's new AMHCD law. Data on the use of AMHCDs in Hawaii will be presented. A draft policy on the use of AMHCD in the Adult Mental Health Division will be passed out and reviewed and the existing AMHCD program of the Hawaii Disability Rights Center will be presented.
